NOTES.
From time to time there is an agitation in favour of collecting all the parish registers and placing them all together in London. The motive alleged is the supposed want of care vt^hich is taken of them by their present custodians. It is thought that possibly the anxiety expressed may be sometimes due to a less disinterested consideration. Be that as it may, the fact that such an agitation may some day succeed is the best justification for the publication of the pages which follow. If the books at present in our possession aie ever removed from their proper home, it will at any rate be possible to know what they contain without making enquiry elsewhere.
The weddings in this book are contained in three volumes, of which the last two which are now in use are duplicates. These have as their first entry a wedding solemnized on 25 Sept., 1837, and the first 15 weddings are also recorded in the earlier volume which begins in Jan. 1813. In the earlier part of the duplicate records the witnesses who signed one of the books are not always the same as those who signed the other. In such cases in what follows all the names of both lists have been given. On page 23 it is noticed that during the '* repair " of the Church marriages were solemnized at Rilston. Through the courtesy of the Rector of that parish all the marriages solemnized there during the period in question can be given. They w^ere : — :
1858 June 10. Henry Featherstone, Appletreewick, & Dorothy
Pedley, Skyreholme. Sep. 13. Matthias Pratt, Greenhow Hill, & Hannah Pounder, Cracoe.
1859 Jan. 12. Thomas Walton, Skyreholme, & Ann Atkinson,
Winterburne. June 15. Thomas Jaques, Pocklington, & Elizabeth Throup, Rylstone.
The list of banns published contains those only of marriages of which there is no record that they were celebrated at Burnsall.
The baptisms are contained in two volumes, the later one, which is still in use, beginning in May, 1837.
The burials are also contained in two volumes, the later, which is in use, beginning in 1870.
Since the notes published in 1912 the writer has discovered at York a rector who has never been given in the list. When Henry Elso died in 1563 it appears from the Institution Books (1553-71 (2) 35) that 22 April 1564 Dns. Joh'es Baiteman B.A. was admitted to the mediety of the Rectory of the parish church of Burnesall now lawfully vacant on the presentation of Humfrey Ellis of the City of York notary public &c.
In the list of schoolmasters there is a gap between the appointment of William Sheepshanks in 1776 and that of Stephen Bland in 1812. Sheepshanks can't have been master very long, probably not more than two or three years, and at any rate had left some time before 1783 when, being an assistant curate of the parish church at Leeds, he was appointed to the vicarage of St. John's Church there. From 1779 to 1811 John Wilson was an assistant curate at Burnsall, and as this period exactly covers the gap, and as Bland undoubtedly then succeeded Wilson in his office of assistant curate, it is very reasonable to suppose that he succeeded him as schoolmaster also.
The assistant clergy of the parish during the period covered by this book were : — 1812 Stephen Bland (till 1850). 1817 Thomas Clarkson (at Rilston). 1826 John B. Birtwhistle, B.A. (at Rilston till 1832). 1832 M. A. Gathercole (at Rilston till 1834). 1835 WilUam Haughton (at Rilston till 1836). 1849 Albert Oockshott Bland, M.A. (till 1860 and again 1862-3). 1855 M. Seymour (at Rilston). 1860 Edward Robert King Cummins, B.A. (till 1861 and again
1863). 1863 John Grisdale (till 1866),
1866 Augustus William George Moore, M.A. (till 1869).
1867 W. Knaggs (at Rilston till 1869).
1869 Godfrey J. Horner (at Rilston till 1873).
1869 Charles Berry (till 1875).
1874 H. E. Owen (at Rilston).
1874 W. H. Strong (at Rilston). .
