Preface
This book is not perfect. There are, no doubt, some errors in it. Its compiler knows of its imperfections, but he does not know of any errors in the book; however, he dares say that they exist. Many of them can no doubt be attributed to his incompetency and to his carelessness, but it is hoped that his critics will not be too severe, and will consider the difficulties attendant upon the publication of such a book.
The only other register of any sort that was ever published for the Fraternity was a catalog compiled by Eobert A. Smythe in 1891, which catalog contained sketches of about one hundred and fifty members, there being less than four hundred members of the Fraternity at that time. Between that and the present time no catalog, directory, nor register has ever been published.
Unfortunately, the records of most of the older chapters are very incomplete and inaccurate, and in a number of instances do not even contain the names of the members of the chapter. Many of the records of the chapters which, at one time or another, have become inactive have been lost. The result is that in many instances old lists, made by persons unknown to the compiler, have had to be relied upon. The college records, college annuals, infor- mation obtained from old members, and various other methods have been employed by the compiler to obtain the records of old members.
Therefore, the compiler naturally expects that there might be some errors in this volume. However, he believes it is reasonably correct. It contains, he feels sure, the name of every member of the Fraternity. He likewise feels sure that it does not contain the name of any one who is not a member. In so far as is possible, these names are given in chronological order. In some instances, however, the compiler is by no means certain of the proper order. With the exception of those instances in which the address of the member is not given at all, or is designated as "Last known address," the compiler thinks that there will be a very small percentage of incorrect addresses. Letters have been sent to every
12 Pi Kappa Alpha
alumnus member of the Fraternity asking for information. A number of them have not replied, but those who have not replied have had at least three letters sent to them, with return address, and none, other than those designated above, have been returned unclaimed.
For most of the historical matter in this book the compiler is greatly indebted to Lloyd K. Byrne, who wrote and published The Manual of Pi Kappa Alpha. He has used that freely.
The space alloAved for this preface is not sufficient to permit the compiler to even mention all those to whom he is indebted for the aid given him in getting out this book. To many loyal active and alumni members of the Fraternity, who have greatly aided him in obtaining information of their own and other chapters, he acknowl- edges his debt. To his various stenographers, who have so dili- gently and so carefully aided him in classifying and typewriting the information contained herein, a large portion of whatever credit there may be for this publication is due.
As imperfect as this book may be found to be, it is believed that it will supply a great need in the history of the Fraternity, and if it should aid in any way in the upward and continuous progress •of the Fraternity to its great and glorious destiny, the compiler will be doubly paid for whatever effort he has made in its preparation.

History of the Fraternity
The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity first came into being on the night of March 1, 1868, in Eoom 39 of the West Eange of the University of Virginia, at Charlottesville, Ya., its founders and the conceivers of its principles being Frederick Southgate Taylor, of Norfolk, Va.; Littleton Waller Tazewell, of Norfolk, Ya.;. Julien Edward Wood, of Elizabeth City, N. C. ; Eobertson Howard, of Washington, D. C. ; and James Benjamin Sclater, of Eichmond, Ya. Of these, Frederick Southgate Taylor seems to have been the prime mover. He had formerly attended William and Mary College. Taylor was in the Law Department at the University; Tazewell in the Academic, and Wood, Howard, and Sclater in the Medical. Some of these founders had previously been cadets at the Virginia Military Institute, and there have been rumors to the effect that the conception of the Fraternity took place there, shortly after the famous battle of New Market, in which the cadets of that Institution took such a prominent part, but that is not believed to be true, though it is true that a very strong personal attachment and friendship had existed among these five founders for some time previous to the founding of the Fraternity.
For exactly one year the Fraternity remained local at the Uni- versity of Virginia, for it was on its first anniversary that the mother chapter, Alpha, at the University of Virginia, established Beta Chapter at Davidson College.
The first three chapters established, Beta, Gamma, and Delta, were chartered solely by Alpha Chapter before any Convention of the Fraternity. Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Theta, Iota, Kappa, and Lambda were likewise established by Alpha Chapter previous to the time when any governing board of the Fraternity had authority to establish chapters, although they were established after con- ventions of the Fraternity had been held, and it required the unanimous vote of the active chapters to establish them.
And so it may be said that the first eleven chapters of the Fraternity were granted their charters by the mother chapter,
14 Pi Kappa Alpha
though the authority to grant a number of them was given by the other active chapters of the Fraternity.
The early years of the Fraternity were ones of mingled success and distress. From one cause or another, many chapters thus established by the mother chapter became inactive. In 1881 there remained but two active chapters of the Fraternity, Alpha and Theta.
About this time, several propositions were considered to merge the Fraternity into another one. In 1882 steps were taken by Alpha Chapter to merge the Fraternity into Delta-Psi Fraternity, which proposition, however, was withdrawn shortly after it was made by Alpha Chapter, and was never acted upon by that Fraternity. In 1883, Sigma-Nu Fraternity, which had likewise been reduced to three chapters, proposed a consolidation of the two organizations, which was not agreed to. In 1884, Theta Chapter considered applying, first to Beta Theta Pi, and, later, to Delta Kappa Epsilon, but decided not to make the applications. Propositions leading to an affiliation, however, were made to Theta Chapter by Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Kappa-Sigma, neither of which was accepted, and later an offer of affiliation was made to the whole Fraternity by Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Alpha Chapter was in favor of accepting, but the other two were not.
In 1889 the Fourth Convention of the Fraternity was held at Hampden-Sidney College, Hampden-Sidney, Va. It was held in what was and remained the chapter hall of Iota Chapter until a few years ago, and that Convention may well be termed the second founding of the Fraternity. Just previous to that Convention, Alpha Chapter had proposed to merge the whole Fraternity in Phi Kappa Sigma, but the other chapters vetoed it. In 1889 the Fraternity became definitely organized, and since that time, al- though there have been years of weakness and struggle, there has never been any prospect of failure, but a continuous growth.
The Fraternity was not organized as a sectional fraternity, as many seem to think. In fact, the tenth chapter came very nearly being located in LaFayette College, at Easton, Pa., but for some reason it was not established at that institution. After the Hampden-Sidney Convention, however, in 1889, the Fraternity confined the location of its chapters to the section south of the Mason and Dixon line ; in other words, it then became exclusively
Frateknity Eegister 15
a Southern Fraternity. The doing away with that ban was the subject of more discussion in Conventions than possibly any other question which the Fraternity has ever had to meet. At each Convention the subject was brought up by some of the members, and long and lengthy debates always took place. Those who favored extension in the North were comparatively few until about the year 1902, at which time they began to become stronger. At the Atlanta Convention, in 1904, they won their first victory, or partial victory, by securing the passage of a resolution deciding to enter the Southwest. In 1905, at the Chattanooga Convention, at the time of the adoption of the present Constitution, the Northern extensionists were very strong. In fact, they at first carried their point, but on a motion to reconsider, after further argument, they were defeated by a substantial majority. At the Eichmond Con- vention, in 1907, the Northern extensionists were defeated, after a day of argument, by a very. small vote, but succeeded in winning a partial victory by permitting the extension of the Fraternity into the entire portion of the United States west of the Mississippi Eiver. The succeeding Convention of 1909, at New Orleans, was destined, however, to be the scene of the longest and most vigorous discussion that had yet occurred on this question, and was likewise destined to be the place of ending it, for at that Convention, after two days of strenuous effort, the Northern extensionists completely won their fight, and the doors of the Fraternity were open to any portion of the United States.
GOVEENMENT
The first twenty years of the Fraternity's government was vested theoretically in the mother chapter, though, as a matter of fact, for a number of those years Theta Chapter, in reality, exercised a large part of that power of government; Theta always being in favor of continuing the Fraternity as Pi Kappa Alpha and not combining it with others, while at times Alpha favored merging, as hereinbefore stated.
The Hampden- Sidney Convention of 1889 provided for govern- ment by Conventions, and selected a Grand Council, consisting of an active and alumnus chapter of each active chapter, which Council elected two officers, and it was shortly thereafter made
16 Pi Kappa Alpha
three, and this Council were to be the governing board during the recesses of the Convention.
In 1891, at the Danville Convention, a set of by-laws for the Grand Council was made, and at different Conventions different offices were created.
The Grand Council system of government was abandoned, how- ever, in 1894, and the government, during the interim of the Conventions, was practically entirely placed in the officers of the Fraternity, though it was in 1897, at the Nashville Convention, that the Constitution was so revised as to transfer, in reality, the powers of the Grand Council to an Executive Committee, known as the Supreme Council, which Council at that time was composed of three officers : the Councilor Princeps, the Grand Secretary, and the Grand Treasurer.
After 1889, with various amendments, the laws of the Fraternity consisted of a written constitution, a secret constitution, and various by-laws and resolutions made by the Conventions. In 1905, at the Chattanooga Convention, this system of laws was abolished. At that Convention a constitution was adopted, em- bodying the fundamental principles of government for the Fraternity. That Constitution, with a few amendments, is the one in use to-day. This Constitution likewise provided for by- laws, which also govern the Fraternity, comparing with the Con- stitution as do the statute laws of a state with the constitution of that state, and dependent for their validity upon their conformity with the Constitution of the Fraternity. This system is in vogue to-day.
The Supreme Council, which now consists of four officers, the Grand Historiographer having been made a member of it at the Chattanooga Convention, is the governing board of the Fraternity. It has complete charge of the affairs of the Fraternity during the vacations of the Convention, but its powers are prescribed and limited to those provided for in the Constitution and by-laws, which, however, give it all the authority necessary for complete management and control of the Fraternity.
At the New Orleans Convention, in 1909, the Fraternity was divided into Districts, or rather, a division into Districts by the Supreme Council was authorized. Each District is in charge of a
Fraternity Eegister 17
District Chief, who must report each year to the Supreme Council of the conditions existing among the chapters in his territory.
The granting of charters, since 1889, has been placed uniformly in the hands of the governing board of the Fraternity; first, the Grand Council, and since then the Supreme Council. Their powers, however, to grant charters, have been limited at different times. Up until 1911, at the Knoxville Convention, it was purely discretionary with it as to where, when, and to whom it should grant its charters. In 1911 it was made necessary for the District Chief, and each of the active chapters in the District in which the proposed new chapter was to be located, to vote for it. This pro- vision is in effect to-day. An application for a charter must have the recommendation of each of the active chapters located in its District, as well as that of the District Chief, before it can be acted upon favorably by the Supreme Council; and, since the Lexington Convention of 1913, it is likewise necessary to notify every active chapter in the Fraternity at least ten days before a charter is granted at any place, though no active chapters other than those in that District have a right to defeat the establishment of a chapter.
PUBLICATIONS
In 1886 a volume called The Index was attempted to be pub- lished through the efforts of Daniel Johnson Brimm, of Theta Chapter, though it never, in fact, materialized, but it was the basis for the catalog published by Bobert Adger Smythe, of Lambda, in 1891.
In 1889 a secret publication known as Pi Kappa Alpha Bulletin was started by Joseph Thompson McAllister, an initiate of Iota Chapter, but at that time a member of Alpha Chapter. Only one publication was made.
In 1891, Bobert Adger Smythe, of Lambda Chapter, published, on his own responsibility, a bimonthly known as Pi Kappa Alpha Journal, which appeared throughout one year.
In 1892 the Grand Council of the Fraternity started The Shield and Diamond, the present official organ of the Fraternity. This appeared for a while as a monthly, then it was changed to a bi- monthly, until 1894, when it was changed to a quarterly, though it suspended publication until 1896, when it was started again as
18 Pi Kappa Alpha
a bimonthly, and continued as such until 1898, when it was decided to publish five copies a year, one every other month during the scholastic session ; and as such it has been published continuously to the present time. Various departments have been added from time to time.
In 1898 the first issue of The Dagger and Key appeared. This was provided for at the Nashville Convention of 1894, but was not carried into effect for four years. It is a secret publication, con- taining the reports of the various officers of the Fraternity, the reports from all the active chapters, the minutes of the Conven- tions, and is published after each Convention. Its publication has continued until the present time.
In 1908, Lloyd Kandolph Byrne, of Alpha-Zeta Chapter, wrote and published, on his own responsibility, A Manual of Pi Kappa Alpha, which is an historical treatise of the Fraternity, its chapters, conventions, and the like.
These compose the chief publications of the Fraternity. A number of marches, dances, and the like have been written and dedicated to the Fraternity. Songs and poems too numerous to mention have likewise been written and dedicated to the Fraternity,, and a song book including the best and most popular of these is now in process of publication.
INSIGNIA, ETC,
The badge of the Fraternity was designed by William Alexander, the first initiate by the founders, and has never been materially changed, although various ones, made at various times, show some changes, and the colors on the shield and on the diamond have been changed, as well as their respective dimensions to each other.
The present badge consists of a shield of white enamel, sur- mounted by a raised diamond in black, the letters on both being in gold. On the diamond are the Greek letters II K A, and on the corners of the shield, commencing on the upper left hand, one letter to a corner, are the small Greek letters <f> </> k a. The badges are made either without jewels or with them.
The first coat of arms of the Fraternity, that adopted and used by Alpha Chapter when the mother chapter system was in use, consisted of a shield surmounted by a diamond, the shape being
Fraternity Eegister 19
very nearly square. In the middle of the diamond was an altar, by the sides of which there was a dagger and key crossed. Smoke of incense arose from the altar, and kneeling before the altar was a plumed and helmeted knight, while an angel hovered over him. Above the altar in the top corners of the diamond were the three Greek letters II K A, while underneath the altar were the four small Greek letters <f> <f> k a, and beneath these letters were two clasped hands. In the upper left-hand corner of the shield was a scene of Damon and Pythias. In the other upper corner was shown a clear firmament, dotted with stars, surrounding the world and looked upon by an open eye. In the lower left-hand corner there were several links of an unbroken chain, and in the lower right-hand corner there was a mailed hand clasping a short dagger.
In 1892, at the Knoxville Convention, what was termed a coat of arms was adopted, which consisted of a massive castle, moated and turreted, a gate in two parts, and in a semicircle over the gate were the capital Greek letters II K A. On the foundation stones were the small Greek letters <f> <f> k a. At the gate on the right-hand side a door opened, with a Greek soldier holding a long spear in his right hand, with the butt resting on the ground. On this soldier's belt there was on the right side a key, on the left side a dagger.
In 1893 this coat of arms was abolished and the original design of the mother chapter again adopted.
In 1907, at the Eichmond Convention, a design of a coat of arms proposed by Maxwell Waide Smith, of Omega Chapter, was adopted, though it was not incorporated in the Constitution until the New Orleans Convention of 1909. That design is the present coat of arms of the Fraternity. It consists of a gold, triangular shield, known as the first style, with a riveted edge and a garnet center. On this shield appear in gold the capital Greek letters II K A, and underneath the Greek letters a gold dagger with the point downward. A gold ribbon appears on the left and right sides of the shield, in which is inscribed in the four folds thereof, respectively, the small Greek letters, in garnet, <f> <f> k a. The shield is supported or rests upon a gold key and sword, crossed behind the shield, and ending at the bottom with a gold chain which passes beneath the lower point of the shield. The hilt of the sword is clasped by a gold hand. The key crosses from the
20 Pi Kappa Alpha
lower left-hand to the upper right-hand corner, with the flange upward. The sword crosses from the lower right-hand corner to the upper left-hand corner, and is of the army service saber type. Beneath the shield appear two sprays of lily-of-the-valley, in green and white, which cross each other and are tied with a ribbon. The shield itself is surmounted by an esquire helmet in gold, on which appear three white feathers. In the background appear rays, as though coming from the sun or lights hidden behind the shield.
The seal of the Fraternity is as follows: In the center of an inner circle are the Greek capital letters II K A, the K being larger than the II and A. Around the upper part of the circle surrounding these letters is written: "Founded at the University of Virginia, March 1, 1868." At the bottom are the four small Greek letters <f> <f> k a. At the top and within the outer circle is the following: "Supreme Council," and at the bottom of the outer circle is: "Governing the Fraternity." A milled circle surrounds it all.
During the initiatory ceremony there is regalia used by those conducting the initiation. This, and the insignia thereon, is strictly of a secret nature.
The colors of the Fraternity are garnet and old gold, the same colors having been in use ever since its foundation.
The official flower of the Fraternity is lily-of-the-valley, which was adopted in 1891. In 1905 the Chattanooga Convention adopted the gold standard tulip, a flower which blooms in the colors of the Fraternity, together with the lily-of-the-valley, but the tulip was abolished at the New Orleans Convention in 1909.
The Eichmond Convention of 1893 adopted a button to be used for both pledges and alumni. It never was very generally in use, however. At the Atlanta Convention of 1904, a pledge button bearing a crossed dagger and key and the capital Greek letters II K A, in gold, on a field of garnet, was adopted.
A banner of the Fraternity was adopted at the Danville Con- vention of 1891, but all kinds of banners are used, as manu- factured by the different manufacturers now.
A yell of the Fraternity was adopted at the Danville Con- vention of 1891, which, however, proved to be unsatisfactory, and,
Fraternity Eegister 21
in 1892, at the Knoxville Convention, an official yell was adopted, as follows:
Wah — rippity — zip — bang !
Whoop — bang — hi ! Hurrah ! Hooray ! Hurrah! Pi!
which is the official yell to-day, though, as a matter of fact, each chapter has yells of its own.
EITITAL
The ritual of the Fraternity follows the original principles of the founders. It was made uniform by Eobert Adger Smythe, of Lambda, and adopted in 1894 at the Nashville Convention. The initiatory ceremony consists of one degree, and all of it is strictly secret, a portion of the ritual being written in cipher. No material change has ever been made in the ritual. Frequently suggestions have been made to add additional degrees and make slight changes in it, but the Conventions have never accepted any of them.
POLICY
The Fraternity is primarily a social organization. Good moral character and high social position have always been deemed essential. Conservatism has always been a characteristic with it, and the character of men which it has taken in is largely responsible for its standing in the many adversities to which it was subjected during its early life.
Sub-rosa chapters have never been permitted nor has any ever existed. An initiate must be a bona fide student of the institution at which the chapter is located, though in a few instances in its past history students from other institutions have been initiated.

Notes of Explanation
The order in which the members are mentioned is the order in which they became members of the Chapter, but for certain years there might be some errors in this. Particularly with reference to Zeta and Eho.
The degrees given are those which are known, and the fact none is given does not mean that the member has no degree. These lists do not purport to give all degrees.
The number in front of the man's name indicates the order in which he joined the Chapter. Wherever one's name appears in this volume the number by which the Chapter initiated him is always the same, and this can be used as a key to this directory.
The names of those who were expelled or resigned from the Fraternity are purposely omitted from these lists.
The names of all former and present Grand Officers, wherever they appear, are printed in dark type.
In the geographical list only the names of those living members whose addresses are known are listed.

ALPHA CHAPTER
University of Virginia charlottesville, va.
HISTORY
Established by the Founders at the University of Virginia on March 1, 1868. Dnring the years 1885 to 1889, the chapter existed on rather independent lines. Though being the mother chapter, and controlling factor in the Fraternity, yet it differed in a number of things with Theta, and the latter chapter, in reality, exercised considerable control during those years. The chapter disbanded in 1890, but in reality never became inactive, and in 1891 it started again upon an active life. From 1891 to 1899 the chapter had a rather uncertain life, but at no time ever surrendered its charter, and since 1899 its progress and prosperity has been continuous. For the first twenty years of the Fraternity this chapter exercised the function of granting charters, though for a large portion of that time charters were only granted upon the unanimous consent of the other chapters.

BETA CHAPTER
Davidson College davidson, n. c.
HISTOKY
The charter was granted on March 1, 1869, largely through the efforts of Augustus Washington Knox, of Alpha, the charter mem- bers being Alfred J. Morrison, Philip Henry Pitts, Thomas Braxton Bailey, George W. Walton, and Wilson James McKay. After one year's existence, the faculty at Davidson College passed a resolution prohibiting fraternities. The members of the chapter met and agreed to disband, rather than exist as a sub-rosa chapter. The chapter remained inactive until November 30, 1904, when it was revived with the following charter members: Charles Collins Orr, Charles Howie Little, Daniel Kirby Pope, James Cameron Story, and David Francis Hunter. It has been in existence ever since.

GAMMA CHAPTER
William and Mary College williamsburg, va.
HISTORY
The charter of this chapter was granted early in 1871, largely through the efforts of Frederick Southgate Taylor, a founder of the Fraternity. It was installed on February 27, 1871, with Robert Washington Goode, Zacharias Hofheimer, Robert Morton Hughes, Robert Strachan Jones, and John Trowe Wilkins as charter members. In 1878 William and Mary College had gotten into such stringent circumstances that it had to disband, and with the disbandment of the college, of course, the chapter became inactive. The college opened in 1888 and on December 20, 1894, the chapter was revived with the following charter members: William Hardy Arthur, John Garlick Campbell, John Andrew Hardy, Thomas Macon Robertson, and Walter Henderson Robert- son. This chapter, however, initiated no initiates, for reasons unknown, so in the fall of 1895 it again became inactive. Largely through the efforts of Charles Washington Coleman, of Alpha, a second revival was had and another charter issued on October 1, 1897, the charter members being Royal Randolph Claiborne, Charles Higdon Lambert, John Lloyd Newcomb, George Leroy Stevens, Reynolds Hankins, and Charles Nash Williams. Since 1896 a scholarship at William and Mary College, to one member of this chapter, has been given by Robert Morton Hughes, of Norfolk, Ya.
